ELEVATOR COMPONENT ENGINEERING

Mücahit Kaan Yiğit

Mechanical Engineer — Elevator Frame Design & Strength Analysis

What I Do

I design and verify the load-bearing steel components of elevators: machine frames, suspension frames, rope deflection profiles and counterweight frames — and check their strength under static and dynamic loading.

The work sits between design and manufacturing: a frame has to be calculable, weldable, and cost-efficient without giving up strength. I treat those as one problem, not three.

Technical Scope

  • Frame strength verification — bending, shear, deflection of safety planks, crossheads and uprights.
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEM) — SolidWorks Simulation and Ansys; stress, deflection, modal behaviour.
  • Rope deflection design — deflection sheave profiles and their strength under emergency braking.
  • Design review — checking an existing in-production part before it is changed or ordered.
  • Material optimisation — reducing plate thickness or profile size while keeping the required safety margin.

Standards

My technical reference is the EN 81 family, particularly:

  • EN 81-20:2020 — Passenger and goods passenger lifts: construction and installation
  • EN 81-50:2020 — Design rules, calculations and verification for lift components

Relevant clauses include 5.7.1.4 (guide rail brackets and their fixing to the building),5.7.2 (permitted stresses and deflections), 5.7.4 (impact factors) and5.11.2 (evaluation of traction capability).

Background

In the design department of an elevator manufacturer I worked on MR and MRL projects — machine frames, suspension frames, rope deflection and counterweight frames — including brake-applied strength checks on deflection profiles. I also produce static and dynamic analyses for elevator component suppliers and manufacturers.

On the field side I have worked in elevator assembly, modernisation, periodic maintenance and TSE inspection labelling, so the drawings stay buildable.
